School holidays

Spring has sprung and the kids are on holidays for the next 2 weeks! We will be holding a zine workshop, run by Southern Tablelands Arts (STA) on Tuesday. Guaranteed to be heaps of fun.

I am excited to be involved in a competition run by Kate from Alphability to help raise awareness about reading and writing difficulties in the Yass Valley region. The next newsletter (October) will include a review of some of Kate's favourite books on dyslexia and the results of the competition.

We had a great event in early September, with Debbie Argue launching her new book Little Species, Big Mystery. It was a fascinating discussion and the book sounds very readable and interesting. Signed copies are available in the shop or online. Just don't mention the Hobbit!

Some shop news - we are now open on Mondays.

Mon - Fri 10 - 4

Sat 10 - 3

Sun 10 - 2

Cecelia and Helen work a day each in the shop and will no doubt be needed more as we head into the Christmas period.

Cecelia will be running a book club focusing on queer fiction. Pop in and see her on Monday's or send us a message if you are interested and spread the word.

Competition

October is Dyslexia Awareness Week and we will be featuring books about dyslexia and stories by and for people living with dyslexia (young and old) in the shop.

Alphability is running a competition, with entries open now!! It is open to all ages from preschool groups to adults (with a 2582 post code) and you can find more information on the Alphability Facebook page or pick up an entry form in the Yass Valley Library or The Yass Book Store.

School holiday fun

STA are holding a zine workshop in the shop on Tuesday 27th September. All ages welcome, kids must be accompanied.

What is a zine you may ask? A zine is a mini magazine that is handmade and can include writing, art, collage or anything you can think of. I can't wait for this, I am a bit of a zine lover. More info and bookings available at the Southern Tablelands Arts page.

We have loads of puzzles and activity books including stickers, colouring in and wipe cleans in the shop and on the website. These may keep them busy for a little while!

New releases

The second half of this year sees the release of some amazing books by new and favourite authors.

  • John Boyne - who wrote The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas - All The Broken Places.

  • Jane Harper's third and last book in the Aaron Falks detective series (Exiles) is out now.

  • Holly Ringland writer of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, has a new book out in October - Seven Skins of Esther Wilding.

  • Grace Tame and Ash Barty both have books out this year.

  • Ian McEwan, Di Morrissey, Kate Atkinson, Maggie O'Farrell, Inga Simpson, Richard Osman, Alex Miller (one of my faves), Celeste Ng, Barbara Kingsolver, Cormack McCarthy, Chris Hammer and more.

I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather, blossom and wattle as much as I am. I look forward to seeing you at one of our events, or in the shop, over the next 3 months.
